ACADEMY HORSE SHOWS
Sarah McClintock: Instructor
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What does Academy mean? Academy is a good way to see if showing horses is right for you or your child(ren). It was designed to introduce newcomers to the show
ring, competing on horseback. Academy is the most inexpensive, entry-level way to gain experience and confidence at horse shows. Also, the attire is more basic and far less elaborate in the academy division.
Do I have to own a horse? You may, however typically most students at academy shows benefit from riding the stable’s lesson horses.
How much do horse shows cost? Many horse shows vary in cost depending on set horse show fees, distance, hotel expense (for instructor), and number of students competing from our barn. Most shows range from $300.00 to $500.00 per student.
What other expenses are there to consider? Aside from the rider’s show attire, some customers prefer to stay closer to the horse show facility, so you may have hotel and meals to consider.
What are the benefits to showing horses? There are many benefits, such as sportsman-ship, determination, confidence, and the ability to act under pressure. Most of all it helps students apply what they have learned during their lessons. Shows are ultimately what we work toward during lessons.
What is proper show ring etiquette? It is only proper to cheer and applaud when the riders are trotting and you think the judge is looking at your favorite. It is also appropriate to do so when the riders are in the line-up and the judge is approaching each one. When riders are walking or cantering you should be quiet. Also, remember to leave the coachingto the instructor.
How many times can a student ride at a show? Depending on the horse show some students may show three times. Each class lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. Many shows only allow riders that receive ribbons in their qualifying class to show back in the championship class. Typically, two times per student can be expected.
What do we need to show? Please look below for a complete list.
